ARtGlass is a company that collaborates with cultural sites to create and deploy transformative wearable augmented reality experiences for site visitors, using ARtGlass’ proprietary technologies and systems.
What is augmented reality?
Augmented reality (AR) is the overlay of images, video, and text onto one’s view of the physical world through a technological device.
What is wearable augmented reality?
WearableAR employs a hands-free device like smartglasses to transmit the augmented experience to the user’s vision, as opposed to a “hands-full” device like a smartphone or tablet.
Why does ARtGlass deploy only wearable (smartglasses) AR experiences?
Smartglasses allow the visitor to walk around with their eyes up and hands free and get the visitor closer to a fully immersive and more visually powerful 3-D interaction with the augmented cultural site content. Having to hand-carry and look down at smartphones and tablets that are limited to 2-D augmentations provides a less powerful visitor experience.
At what types of cultural sites is ARtGlass being used?
ARtGlass has been successfully deployed at the full array of cultural sites, including museums of art, science, and culture, historic palaces, homesteads, public arenas, historic districts and city centers, archaeological sites and ruins, and historical parks and landscapes.
Where is ARtGlass deployed?
ARtGlass has transformed visitor experiences at some of Europe’s most iconic heritage sites, with new sites being added each week. ARtGlass has now come to North America and will soon be available at sites throughout the United States and Canada.
What is ARtGlass’ “special sauce?”
The ARtGlass team combines AR technological prowess with deep expertise in the subject matter of cultural heritage and tourism. Our team knows how to create compelling storytelling experiences in the distinctive context of cultural sites. Our technology is a powerful tool that allows us to draw greater attention to and understanding of the site’s important content. Moreover, our software is completely proprietary—we rely on no third-party components—so we’re always able to ensure the longevity of the tours created at each site.
What makes an ARtGlass-enabled tour superior to a regular guided tour?
ARtGlass tours and regular docent-guided tours can be highly complementary. Many sites do not have docents constantly available, whereas ARtGlass tours empower visitors to proceed at their own pace while still having access to the information provided during a docent-guided tour. Also, augmented reality can make elements of a tour “come alive” in ways that conventional tours cannot. For instance, at an ARtGlass site a tour can be given by multiple historical characters associated with a site, each contributing their perspective to the visitor’s experience.
What makes an ARtGlass-enabled tour superior to an audio-guided tour?
An ARtGlass tour is superior to an audio-guided tour because an ARtGlass tour has both audio and dynamic 3D visual elements, engaging the visitor’s senses in more powerful ways. Studies show that visitors using AR learn more and are more excited by the experience—and thus more likely to return and recommend it to others.
What makes an ARtGlass-enabled tour superior to a handheld (smartphone or tablet) AR tour?
Unlike an augmented reality tour with a mobile device, the ARtGlass tour does not require a visitor to download an app onto their mobile device to enjoy the experience. Moreover, an ARtGlass tour does not require visitors to hold their mobile devices in front of them—which can quickly become tiring, and creates a physical barrier—to experience augmented reality. Participating in an augmented reality tour using smartglasses enables visitors to enjoy what the site offers with minimal distraction by hardware.
How many site visitors have experienced an ARtGlass tour?
What is the satisfaction rate among ARtGlass tour users?
ARtGlass users report a 98% satisfaction rate.
How does an ARtGlass experience advance a cultural site’s teaching mission?
Because a cultural site’s staff collaborate closely with the ARtGlass team in creating the ARtGlass tour, the AR experience is tailored to fit the site’s teaching mission. Studies show the visitors pay closer attention to the site’s content and spend more time in the experience than they do on non-AR tours.
How does ARtGlass help a cultural site’s financial bottom line?
The presence of ARtGlass augmented reality tours at a site can help attract more first-time and return visits. Embracing AR helps provide a distinct advantage in the competitive market for site visitors—it bolsters a site’s reputation as entrepreneurial and willing to go the extra mile to create dynamic experiences for their guests. Sites also derive additional income from ticket sales tied to the ARtGlass offering.
How can I secure an ARtGlass tour for my cultural site?
How does the ARtGlass team work with my cultural site team?
Our team collaborates with your team to create the augmented reality experience. We help you identify the items in your collection or the features of your site that, when treated with the magic of ARtGlass, will provide the most compelling story-telling experience for visitors. We also assist your team in marketing and sales strategy, data analysis, and more. See services.
How much does the development of an ARtGlass tour cost my cultural site?
ARtGlass offers development and services packages tailored to a variety of site needs, including arrangements in which the site has no up-front costs. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities.
How long and how detailed can we make the ARtGlass tour at our site?
The length, content, and number of variations of your site’s ARtGlass experience depends on your educational and entertainment goals. We work with you to tailor the design based upon your site’s unique needs and curators’ vision. Typically, ARtGlass experiences range from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
Who buys and provides the smartglasses hardware to visitors?
ARtGlass purchases and provides the smartglasses at each site and assists in maintenance and upgrades. There are no hardware costs passed on to the sites.
What smartglasses hardware does ARtGlass use for its tours?
The beauty of our proprietary technology is that it can work on any of the dozens of smartglasses now available commercially. Most frequently we deploy Epson Moverio smartglasses, and we work closely with Epson’s team to ensure synergy between our operating system and each next generation of the hardware. We are now planning for the introduction of Epson’s forthcoming model, the Moverio 350, to ARtGlass experiences globally.
Who manages the ARtGlass proprietary tour-design software?
The ARtGlass technology used to design each site experience is managed by the ARtGlass team. This allows the site’s team to focus on what they do best—developing the most compelling content for story-telling—while we handle the technical elements of the design.
Can ARtGlass capture useful data from the visitors’ ARtGlass tours?
Yes, ARtGlass can capture meaningful data from your visitors’ experience. For instance, we can help you determine which parts of the experience visitors find most compelling and use that data to inform future designs. We love data and will surprise you with the knowledge we can glean for your use in better serving your visitors.
How frequently can ARtGlass make additions and improvements to an ARtGlass experience once it is deployed at a site?
As frequently as you need.
Can a site offer multiple ARtGlass experiences at a single site?
Yes. Sites can offer more than one ARtGlass tour at a given time, or create special tours for temporary exhibits.
Can the tours be tailored to visitors of different ages and who speak different languages?
ARtGlass experiences can be tailored to fit multiple audiences and languages based on your site’s needs.
Can the tours be inside, outside, or both?
ARtGlass has successfully designed tours for exclusively indoor spaces, exclusively outdoor spaces, and experiences that move between indoor and outdoor elements. The ARtGlass software allows us to adjust according to light sensitivity.
Can the ARtGlass team help me persuade my skeptical colleagues of the potential value of AR to our site?
We are always pleased help you address your colleagues’ questions and to explore whether and how ARtGlass can energize your site experience. Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.
